This is Lambeth Calling!

First published on: 19th July 2022

There is only one week to go until more than 650 Anglican Bishops from all over the world are welcomed to Canterbury for the 15th Lambeth Conference.

Canterbury will play host to the Bishops, who will travel from approximately 165 countries, to meet together as ‘God’s Church for God’s World - walking, listening and witnessing together’.

The conference gathers every ten years – though it has been 14 years since the last one - and this year a series of ‘Lambeth Calls’ will be considered by the Bishops. This is the name being given to describe declarations, affirmations and common calls to the church shared by Bishops that are taking part in the Lambeth Conference in 2022. The Calls will cover:

•    Mission and Evangelism
•    Reconciliation
•    Safe Church
•    The Environment and Sustainable Development
•    Christian Unity
•    Inter-faith Relations
•    Anglican Identity
•    Human Dignity
•    Discipleship

The Rt Revd Rose Hudson-Wilkin, The Bishop of Dover, said: “I am looking forward with great joy to such a worldwide event which is happening in our own backyard.

“The Anglican Communion is a worldwide family of tens of millions of people, beautiful in their diversity, united through their love of God and commitment to following Christ wherever they live, whatever they face.

“As we meet together, we will be considering issues that affect the lives of the communities we serve - global issues for which we will commit to local solutions, each part of the family playing its part in building a better future for our world.”

The Most Revd & Rt Hon Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury, said: “The Lambeth Conference will be an historic gathering of Bishops from around the global Anglican Communion.

“We will seek a fresh vision for the Church to follow God’s call in the 21st Century.

“We meet against the backdrop of many crises in our world that are especially affecting the most vulnerable: the wake of the pandemic, rising global food prices, climate crisis, conflict and poverty.

“As we join together from our many different countries, facing many different challenges, I pray that we will find in our diversity the overwhelming love of Jesus, which brings people together to transform the world.”
