Year 2 infant school leavers fill the Cathedral

The children and staff look at stained glass windows in Canterbury Cathedral

Around 300 children, staff and volunteers from the four infant schools across our diocese visited Canterbury Cathedral for two days of celebration, learning, prayer and worship.

Over the two days there was the opportunity for learning, exploring, prayer, worship and lots of fun too for the Year 2 pupils who are soon to leave their Church of England infant school and move on to a new junior school in September.

The theme of the days was ‘Be Brave’ inspired by the words in Jeremiah 29:11 - 'I have good plans for you, says the Lord. You have a bright, hope-filled future'.

The days culminated in a special shared worship in The Crypt, with elements of the service led by the pupils.

We were delighted to have Bishop Rose, Dean David and Archdeacon Will with us during the two days.

Schools Officer Natalie Ralph said: “It was a really special two days, seeing the Cathedral full of some of our youngest school children all excited to be in such a magnificent place.

“For most, it was their first visit to Canterbury Cathedral.

“We loved having the opportunity to celebrate, thank and inspire our Year 2 pupils and their school families."

Liz Thomas-Friend, Executive Headteacher of St Alphege Infants and Herne Infants, shared thanks, “for such a refreshing and uplifting day".

"Our time at the Cathedral was both inspiring and memorable.

"We found the service very moving and full of joy.”

Schools that took part in the days were:

  • St Alphege CE Infant School
  • Herne CE Infant and Nursery School
  • Thurnham CE Infant School
  • St Michael’s CE Infant School
