Schools

Canterbury Diocese encourages schools to participate in caring for our environment by joining the Eco Schools and/or Let’s Go Zero programmes.

Schools are included in the national Routemap to Net Zero Carbon by 2030.  As part of this Schools are also encouraged to complete the Energy Toolkit as a means of recording how well we are progressing towards the net zero target.  Further information on how to become a net zero carbon school can be found on The Church of England website.

Eco Schools

For over 25 years Eco-Schools has been empowering children to drive change and improve their environmental awareness through the simple Seven-Step framework in order to achieve the Eco-Schools Green Flag award.  There are separate pathways for Early Years, Primary and Secondary schools.  From the list of ten environment topics, schools choose three topics to work through for their green flag award.

Let’s go zero

Let's Go Zero 2030 is a programme for schools to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2030.  Once registered, schools are able to get support in setting their zero carbon targets and preparing roadmaps for delivery.  Many schools in Kent have already joined the programme.

Energy toolkit

The Energy Toolkit enables church schools to calculate their carbon footprint.  It can be accessed online at https://eft.parishreturns.info/.  Canterbury Diocese urges all schools to complete the toolkit as part of our commitment to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2030.

Carbon Action Plan

  1. Every school must have a Carbon Action Plan covering four key areas: decarbonisation; adaptation and resilience; biodiversity; and climate education and green careers.
  2. Every school must be covered by a Nominated School Sustainability Lead, either within the school or academy trust.
