Statement on Home Office Announcement regarding Dubs Amendment
Following the Home Office announcement regarding its policy on the transfer of unaccompanied asylum-seeking children to the UK, Rt Rev Trevor Willmott the Bishop of Dover has issued the following statement:
‘While commending the steps that have already been taken by Government under the Dubs amendment, it is deeply worrying to learn that this vital effort is to be curtailed. Now is not the time to step back from our responsibility towards the vulnerable children so desperately in need of our care and protection. Through the work we are engaged with here in Kent we are acutely aware of the challenges, but also of the life-changing impact that our country’s offer of safety, stability and compassion brings to the children and families who have been resettled here in our communities. I would urge us not to lose sight of our shared humanity with those fleeing intolerable conflict and danger, but to continue to reach out to them as fellow brothers and sisters.’
