Churches mark 80th anniversary of VE Day

St John’s Swalecliffe is just one of the churches in our Diocese to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day.

On and around 8 May 2025, communities will come together to honour the sacrifices made by those who served in the conflict and to pray for lasting peace both at home and abroad.

What began as a plan to knit 80 poppies to decorate the pulpit at St John’s has blossomed into a heart-warming community effort. Over 350 hand-knitted poppies have now been created by members of all ages – including some who had never picked up a pair of knitting needles before.

These beautiful tributes will be displayed on the church’s surrounding fence, joined by colourful banners made by local children. It’s a celebration of peace, remembrance, and the power of community.

Join them on Saturday 10 May, 11am–3pm for the open day. Enjoy refreshments and cake whilst also taking a moment to reflect around the memorial tablet.

To mark the anniversary in Borden, a service of thanksgiving is being held at St Peter and St Paul’s at 7pm on Thursday 8 May, followed by an event with food and music at The Playstool from 8pm-10pm

In Tenterden there will be a focus on honouring the past and celebrating a future built on unity, hope, and peace in a service of thanksgiving by Churches Together.

There are also events happening in Canterbury Cathedral, including a special programme of services and an opportunity to see the Canterbury Book of Remembrance on display throughout May in the North Quire Aisle.

The Church of England has produced free resources for parishes and communities to use with services and events for VE Day.
