Helping the community before, during and after a flood
There is a shortage of flood wardens across the county so the Kent Resilience Forum is asking churches to encourage people within their communities to volunteer for the role.
Churches can also equip themselves with practical information about flooding, weather warnings and safety.
Rev Shuna Body said: “Often in times of crisis, people will turn to the church for help and support and here we can also be proactive by helping shape the response to possible flooding.
“In an emergency, knowing our community is key as we can quickly share reliable information with the professionals whose duty it is to respond. And that’s so important.
“Local knowledge is particularly useful during a flood, especially where vulnerable people are involved. It is another way that we can help serve our communities.”
Free training is available from the Environment Agency and Kent Resilience Team. It takes two hours and the training consists of 5 key modules; role of warden, types of flood, catchment overview, flood and weather warnings and flood safety.
Rev Shuna Body, who works for Kent Fire & Rescue, is coordinating training for churches who wish to link up with others in their area for joint training. Please contact Shuna on shuna.body@kent.fire-uk.org or 01622 692121
