First inter-school faith event

On Friday 27 September around 40 students from The Archbishop’s School, Canterbury and The John Wallis Academy, Ashford came together for a day of discussion, reflection and worship.

Our first inter-school event for Year 11s to Sixth Form, called The Retreat, was hosted by the Children, Young People and Education team in our diocese along with The Archbishop’s School.

The theme was based on Matthew 13:1-23 ‘The Parable of the Sower’ with a focus on personal growth and how young people can feel empowered to nurture this. The day consisted of four workshops addressing hopes and dreams, fears and anxieties, identity and resilience. Students spent time reflecting upon each topic including taking part in activities and focusing on various pieces of scripture.

The Bishop of Dover, the Rt Revd Rose Hudson-Wilkin attended, taking part in the workshops alongside the students and leading collective worship. Tobi Martins-Ojo from the Growing Faith Foundation also spent time with students talking about their faith development.

Speaking after the event, Bishop Rose said: “It was wonderful to see so many young people taking part, reflecting on scripture, with a focus on personal growth.

“The theme for this year was based on the Parable of the Sower, and I hope that the event helped to sow the seed of the Kingdom of God, as we build on our bold outcome to double the number of children and young disciples in our diocese.”

Jen Tobin, Lead Officer for Children and Young People in our diocese helped to organise the event. Reflecting on the day, Jen said: “It was encouraging to see the young people actively take part in discussions and explore how the theme spoke to them.

“We plan for The Retreat to become an annual event, which will be offered to young people within our diocese from Year 11 to 13.”

If you would be interested in your school taking part in a future event, contact Jen Tobin.

Special thanks from the Children Young People and Education team goes to The Archbishop’s School for hosting the event and to Rev Dawn Watson for all her support in making the day happen.
