The Bishop of Dover will host a discussion panel with special guest Lord Dubs as part of a webinar jointly organised by Canterbury Cathedral and the Diocese of Canterbury to mark Refugee Week.
The online event is open for everyone to attend and will explore how to change the conversation surrounding those seeking refuge in different countries.
The Bishop of Dover, Rt Revd Rose Hudson-Wilkin said: “The recent High Court ruling that the Home Office decision to house people at the Napier barracks was unlawful shows that we have a long way to go.
“We need to ask how the nature and content of our public discourse ever allowed us the impression that it was acceptable to house people in this way. It is time now to shift our conversations - private and public - about people seeking safety and protection.
“To be a refugee is running toward hope and life. There is much fear and anxiety spoken of around those seeking asylum - we need to understand and respond well to that fear wherever we find it.
“What can we learn? What can we share so we can open our hearts and better understand? Let us begin that new conversation today.”
The webinar is being jointly organised by the Diocese of Canterbury and Canterbury Cathedral with support and guest speakers from Refugee Tales, Kent Refugee Action Network, The Friends of Canterbury Cathedral and a representative from The Walk.
The event will be held on Saturday 19 June and will run from 9.30am to 12.30pm. The programme will include the panel discussion, a talk on the Gifts We Share, videos exploring local projects, a myth-busting section and special musical guests Stile Antico will perform along with an introduction to the morning given by the Dean of Canterbury Cathedral.
