Our Clergy Step Up for the London Marathon

Two vicars in The Diocese of Canterbury are swapping their cassocks for running gear this April as they take on the London Marathon. Revd Jo Purle, Team Vicar of Ashford Town Benefice and Revd Melissa Carter, Team Vicar of Dover Town Benefice will both be running for causes close to their hearts with plenty of determination, prayer, and maybe even a jelly baby or two along the way...

Melissa's Story

For Revd Melissa, signing up for the marathon was inspired by personal health challenges. But having taken on the challenge, it's become a very spiritual activity for her. Melissa says: “Running is not just about fitness – it’s become prayer time". Especially on long runs, she feels God's presence as her greatest encourager, though she admits “some days I’m literally counting to 100 just to keep going, but it works!”

Melissa, who is visually impaired, is running in support of Guide Dogs – a cause that’s deeply personal. Her own guide dog Taylor, as well as other dogs since she was 19, have given her independence and confidence. “People pray for my healing – but for me, God has healed in a different way through guide dogs and the service they provide."

Melissa reassures that Taylor won’t be running, and that she wouldn't last very long if she did – much preferring a nap! But Melissa’s husband will be on the route cheering her on as she runs alongside a guide runner.

The support from her four churches has been overwhelming. “It’s been so touching to see people donating – not just to support guide dogs, but to support me. I’ve already exceeded my fundraising target!”

Jo's Story

Revd Jo is no stranger to running. She’s part of a cani-cross club, which involves running whilst harnessed to a dog, and usually runs a couple of times a week. But the marathon? That’s a first.

“It’s always been a dream,” she says. “I’ve done a few half-marathons before, but this is the big one. I’m running for a small Christian charity, JENGA, that I help lead in Uganda, so it’s very close to my heart.”

The charity supports local communities through things like literacy training, Alpha courses, and child sponsorships – all with the focus of demonstrating God’s love in practical ways.

“For me, it’s not just a race—it’s a personal pilgrimage. I listen to worship music, pray, and mentally decompress while I run. It’s my time with God… and I feel like I’ve definitely earned a slice of cake afterwards!”

Jo describes her time in Uganda as deeply inspiring: “Their faith in the middle of hardship is humbling. I go there hoping to give something, and come back feeling like I’ve received more than I gave.”
